Die Gattung Rhodococcus enthält eine Vielzahl von Gram-positiven, aeroben, säureresistenten, stäbchenförmigen Bakterienarten, die im Boden leben und weltweit verbreitet sind. Darunter befinden sich auch einige Krankheitserreger. Das Genom umfasst ca. 9,7 Mio. Basenpaare und gilt damit als eines der größten Bakteriengenome überhaupt. Verpackt ist das Genom in einem linearen Chromosom und drei linearen Plasmiden. Das Genom ist seit Oktober 2006 vollständig sequenziert.[1]

Der Organismus ist in der Lage, polychlorierte Biphenyle (PCB) umzuwandeln und kann so auf kontaminierten Böden leben. Auf einem mit Lindan kontaminierten Boden ist R. sp. RHA1 extrahiert worden. Eine industrielle Nutzung von Rhodococcus erfolgt über die Herstellung von bioaktiven Steroiden, Acrylamid und Acrylsäure.

Rhodococcus gehört zu den Actinomycetales innerhalb der Actinobakterien. Die nächsten Verwandten sind das Mycobacterium und Corynebacterium.

Synonyme

Die Art Rhodococcus equi findet man oft auch unter den Namen Corynebacterium equi. Weitere Synonyme für diese Art sind u. a.: Nocardia restricta, Bacillus hoagii, Corynebacterium purulentus, Mycobacterium equi, Mycobacterium restrictum und Proactinomyces restrictus.

Die Art Rhodococcus bronchialis wird nun als Gordonia bronchialis und R. rubropertinctus als Gordonia rubripertincta zu den Gordoniaceae gestellt.
